The government of Montenegro has suffered a ransomware attack on its critical infrastructure.

Public Administration Minister Maras Dukaj stated on local television yesterday that behind the attack is an organized cybercrime group. The effects of the incident continue for the tenth day.

The U.S. Embassy has warned Americans that an ongoing ransomware attack in Montenegro could cause widespread disruption to key public services and government services.

Montenegro is a NATO member and NATO will help them with incident response, defense, and remediation of this cyber incident.

FBI is deploying a team of cybersecurity experts to Montenegro to investigate a massive cyberattack that hit the country’s critical infrastructure over the weekend.

However, the Cuba ransomware gang listed the Parliament of Montenegro (Skupstina) as its victim and claimed to have stolen financial documents, correspondence with banks, balance sheets, tax documents, compensation, and even source code.

The digital infrastructure of a major part of Montenegro’s public administration has been offline since August 22 following a ransomware attack security sources told.

Montenegrin officials have blamed Russia for the attack and said the country was “under a hybrid war at the moment,” the AP reported.

Montenegro has been without a prime minister since August 20, when the country’s parliament voted to pass a no-confidence motion against the prime minister.

Montenegro joined NATO in 2017 despite opposition from Russia. It also recently joined the European Union’s sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Public Administration Minister Maras Dukaj also added that the attackers demanded of $10 million ransom amount from the government.
